I am currently studying for my Master Aromatherapy Diploma. I use
only therapeutic grade essential oils in my private yoga and
massage sessions. These essential oils are 100% organic and not
synthetic, nor have they been diluted or adulterated with any filler
oils or synthetic products. Only pure essential oils can be
considered medicinal.
Aromatherapy is a holistic herbal medicine practice that
focuses on the use of essential oils to support emotional and
physical health.
Essential oils are highly potent extractions from plants such as
the oil from citrus rinds like lemon, which many of us are
familiar with. But many different parts of plants, such as the
roots and leaves can contain the essential oils. It is thought
that plants make these strong aromatic compounds to protect
against pests, attract beneficial organisms, and fight disease.
Most essential oils have strong antibacterial, antiviral, or
antifungal properties.
Unlike vegetable oils such as olive or sunflower which are thick
and greasy, essential oils are volatile oils, which means that if
exposed to air they disperse (evaporate) because their
molecules are so small. Because of the small size of the
molecular components, essential oils are readily absorbed by
the human body through inhalation or application to the skin
(directly or diluted with a vegetable/nut oil). Some essential
oils can also be ingested with the proper supervision of a
certified aromatherapist.
We can use essential oils to support our emotional and
physical health because the unique chemicals in pure essential
oils have specific effects in the body and mind. For instance,
the pure essential oil of peppermint (Mentha piperita) tends to
have cooling and anti-inflammatory effects on the body, and
refreshing, uplifting effects on the mind. Among doxzens of
other applications, Peppermint essential oil can also be used
to improve concentration, reduce appetite, soothe digestive
tract inflammation, and repel insects.
The majority of common commercial products today that claim
to be “aromatherapy” such as air fresheners and laundry
detergents use low quality adulterated essential oils or
synthetic scents that do not have medicinal value and usually
contain carcinogens.
I have had particular success treating private clients with a
combination of yoga, massage, and essential oils to
remediate chronic back pain, muscles spasms, digestive
imbalances and emotional stress, and insomnia.
